The Credit Union was charterd on December 17, 1963 with 12 charter members. They each deposited $5.00 to their share account and Big Sky Federal Credit Union was born. The field of membership is for Montana State employees headquartered out of Yellowstone Co, retired state workers, family members, and students, faculty, and employees of MSU-B.

The first loan ever done was for $40.00 to an employee of the MDOT who had to go out of town for a few days for work. Not only has the membership grown substantially, but the size of the loans have increased as well.

Within one year of operation the Credit Union grew to 157 members and had to be moved from a drawer in the manager's desk to his basement. With continued growth and success, the Credit Union has had several changes of address. It was housed in the loft of the Highway Department for many years. For 17 years the location was 954 Central Ave in a tiny building that became too small when computers and printers came into use. In 1998 the Credit Union bought property at 990 Grand Ave and began remodeling the former Heroes Subs building to suit Credit Union needs. In April of 1999 the building was ready to be inhabited and Big Sky Federal Credit Union had its new permanent home. There is plenty of room for all the equipment we need and it is a very pleasant place to conduct your financial business.

The Board of Directors, the Credit Committee, and the Supervisory Committee are all comprised of volunteers from the membership who donate their time and energy to insure that the Credit Union is the best it can be.

Big Sky Federal Credit Union can still boast that when you call you will be talking to a real person and not have to push buttons through an endless menu before you can get your questions answered.

There's no doubt that our years of success since our humble beginnings in 1963 are directly due to our members/owners. Members are the bedrock of this institution.
